36 Feet Along The Whale Shark Carcass Brought To Port City


KARACHI, February 07: A whale shark 36 feet long was Tuesday morning brought the port of Karachi, caught by local fishermen who said they had found dead in the open sea, although some experts believe that the shark could have been killed after being entangled in a network.

The female fish weighs about 7,000 kilos, according to experts.

The whale shark was pulled from the canal with the help of two cranes to applause from the hundreds of spectators.

"I bought the fish, which usually has no significant commercial value, with the help of my friends just to appreciate the efforts of the fishermen deserve a reward after spending a day in the open sea," said Haji Qasim, who said he bought the fish for RS200, 000.

The authorities said, had enabled him to keep the fish in the harbor at least three days for public viewing. "Then I will sell the meat to the people running the poultry industry as food," he said.

The Department of Wildlife Sindh was not involved in the ground that "the species is not protected under Pakistani law and exclusive jurisdiction lies with the fisheries authorities.

"Although the department team went there for observation, the matter does not fall within our jurisdiction," said Mansoor Ali Shah, representing the Department of Social Welfare.

Known as the largest shark and largest fish in the world and a species very docile and not aggressive, the whale shark is in the vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Is included in Appendix 2 of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species). 

That means fishing for this species is prohibited by CITES that Pakistan is also a signed and the state is necessary to carry out such activity, said Mohammad Moazzam Khan, former director of the Department of Marine Fisheries is currently working as a consultant with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).  According to Mr. Khan, about 35 whale sharks have been taken and is reported killed or captured primarily around Karachi since 2006.  A year ago, the same species of whale shark had become entangled in a net and carried to the beach hawkesbay.   

The largest specimen ever recorded was captured in the world outside the island of Baba, November 11, 1947. It was 12.65 meters (41.50ft) long, weighed more than 21.5 tons and had a girth of seven meters, according to experts.  The whale shark is caught as bycatch. Studies and observations show that the Arabian Sea food is served, resting and breeding ground for fish. Unlike other fish, sharks have no bones.

It is called a whale, because of its enormous size. shark skeletons are cartilage, said Khan.  He added that about 64 types of sharks, including all dangerous predatory fish, but the most lethal white shark, had so far been reported in Pakistani waters.  He said the whale shark was caught not usually due to poor quality meat.
